James Jr. continued farming in the same area. He married Mary Hext on March 5, 1861. John Hext, brother of the bride was the best man and Emma Tompkins sister of the groom was the maid of honour.

Mary Hext was the daughter of Thomas Hext and Elizabeth Hamylin. Thomas was born in Devonshire, England on May 12, 1813 and Elizabeth, also from Devonshire, was born October 31, 1814. They moved to Canada and farmed in the Nassouri Township area. She died September 10, 1888 and he died July 15, 1901. They are both buried in the Episcopal Cemetery in Woodstock.

Mary was born at Widecombe in the Moor, Devonshire on March 26, 1842.

In 1879 James and Mary moved their family to a farm on the Lake Shore road west of the Merlin town line. Here they had their last child Albert. Later they moved to Merlin.

James Tompkins Jr. died of cancer of the liver on December 16, 1912 and Mary died of cancer of the kidney on May 18, 1914. They are buried in Shank's Cemetery on #3 highway west of Port Alma, under the same stone. In his obituary it says that James was 41 years a member of the Methodist Church and for many years acted as either Sunday school Superintendent or Bible Class teacher at Wesley Sunday School.

The cause of her death was kidney cancer.
